A multi-award-nominated Squamish duo have just released their latest CD, 鈥楯ungle Safari鈥�, that aims to entertain children while teaching them about endangered animals.
Daryl Robb and Julie Holterman (aka Lou Lou), of Down by the Docks, have performed both locally and internationally, and have been entertaining children at libraries, festivals, schools, and private concerts for over 15 years.
Known for their catchy tunes, original lyrics and engaging performances, the pair bring a new dimension to storytelling using songs, tales, jokes, and plenty of high energy to make learning fun for all ages.
They鈥檙e also joined on stage by a colourful cast of characters 鈥� and character assistants, someof whom are local 鈥� including Leroy the Lobster, Nimala the Slender Loris and Diggy the Blue Iguana
Jungle Safariis their eighth CD, the idea for which came from a theme show they did for libraries across Canada, explained Robb, whose roles include singer, song writer and guitarist.
鈥淭he story goes that Down by the Docks takes you on a Safari to three different jungles seeking endangered animals. It was a highly energetic and educational performance and we finally found the way to capture that energy on a CD.鈥�
Though they previously made seven CDs, this is the first time they鈥檝e captured an actual show and turned it into a CD, Robb said. Previous CDs, including the East Coast Music Award nominated On the Back Porch, would simply include favourite songs and stories.
This means teachers, educators and parents can now enjoy an entireDown by the Docks floor show from the comfort of their own home or classroom.
And not just in Canada.
鈥淢any around the world are enjoying the Jungle Boogie (Shake It Down) song on Facebook. Almost 19,000 views,鈥� said Robb.
It鈥檚 also one of his personal favourites, he added, in addition to Go Cheetah Go, and Lobster Shaking Rock.
Behind the CD was a team of people, including Nino Celella of Sound & Soul Studios in Squamish.
鈥淲e started in February of 2016鈥� and had fun creating music using the sounds of different continents, cultures and musical styles.鈥�
The resulting CD was the best they鈥檝e ever done, Robb said.
Though their CD will help them reach a wider audience, there鈥檚 nothing like the feeling of a live performance.
鈥淥ne of my favourite experiences was at the Surrey Children鈥檚 Festival where the kids kept coming on stage with us to dance to our songs,鈥� explained Robb. 鈥淎nd the whole experience in the Cayman Islands 鈥e lost count the thank yous and hugs we received.鈥�
