She won!
Squamish's Kris Latham, of Second Chance Cheekeye Ranch, has won Horse Canada magazine's 2018 Hero of the Horse award.
The award is decided by votes for the person who shows the most passion and compassion for horses.
The winner gets bragging rights, a trophy and $2,000 to continue fulfilling their horsey passion.
Latham founded the Squamish Valley ranch in 2016 and set up the horse rescue to rehabilitate, and re-home vulnerable horses.
The winner was announced in November's edition of the magazine, which is already on store shelves.Â
"Thank you so very much for your help and kind words, thanks to the volunteers for your dedication and hard work, thanks for your votes, shares, and likes, and thanks for supporting Kris and the team here in our efforts to save all the lives we can, and change the future for horses in need in Canada," reads a post on the organization's Facebook page.
Since November 2016, the ranch has rescued 47 horses and re-homed 21.
