It is her town, at least for the day.
Grade 4 student Matilda Vasina was chosen as Squamish鈥檚 Mayor for a Day on Friday, May 25.
Matilda, who attends Squamish Waldorf School, is joined by three Deputy Mayors, Squamish Elementary Grade 6 student Chloe Young, and Lila Folinsbee and Eden Lumb, Squamish Montessori Grade 3 and Grade 2 students.
鈥淚t鈥檚 very clear that we are raising the next generation of thoughtful leaders, entrepreneurs, business people and community volunteers,鈥� said Mayor Patricia Heintzman, in a news release about the winners.
鈥淎ll of the students demonstrated creativity, passion and a desire to do great things in our growing community, which is so encouraging and inspiring to see. I am confident Squamish will be in good hands for many years to come.鈥�
Matilda submitted an illustration of a 鈥榳orld full of peace鈥� along with letters on the importance of conserving energy and caring for animals.
She also wrote an original song about world peace.
Chloe expressed ideas on how to increase Sea to Sky Highway safety and the importance of youth and community engagement in municipal affairs.
Lila and Eden jointly submitted an illustrated vision for a green Squamish along with their ideas for reducing waste, affordable housing, and caring for the natural environment 鈥� complete with dried leaves, flowers and bark.
Mayor for a Day contest winners are treated to a morning of activities including a visit to the dog pound and SPCA, photos taken in the Mayor鈥檚 Chair at municipal hall, a tour of the Squamish RCMP Detachment and a ride in a fire truck. They also enjoy a pizza lunch shared back at their school.
