First Nations culture will be taught starting in the fall of 2018 at the Squamish Waldorf School.

It will be supported by a $3,750 community enhancement grant given out April 12 by the Squamish Arts Council.

In collaboration with Tsawaysia Spukwus, the First Nations Cultural Teachings Project will bring Indigenous culture and heritage into the curriculum from grades 1 to 8 in a series of workshops such as cedar bark weaving, wool weaving and dyeing and drum making.

Spukwus 鈥 also known as Alice Guss 鈥 has more than 20 years experience working with First Nations communities as a director of education.

These workshops will be integrated into Squamish Waldorf School's handwork and history classes.

鈥淏y bringing First Nations crafts, singing and storytelling into our classrooms, we intend to advance our goal of educating our students about local culture and history,鈥 said Squamish Waldorf School principal, Gabriel Alden Hull, in a news release.

鈥淭his initiative will strengthen the connection between Squamish Waldorf School and First Nations, and will also set the stage for greater understanding of the First Nations culture in our community and for future truth and reconciliation studies.鈥
