Want to nibble on some tasty, locally-produced eats, sip some quality wine, listen to some hip tunes while aerialists circle above – plus help a good cause?
All this and more is on offer this year at Crave 2016: Dining for Dignity presented by Squamish Helping Hands Society on Oct. 29.
The annual event, in its fifth year, is the main fundraiser for the society, which helps feed and shelter Squamish’s approximately 200 homeless. The society is working toward a new and enhanced community facility, according to Ken Bailey, vice-chair of the Squamish Helping Hands Society board.
Of course it is foundational for fundraising, but I think it is also equally important to give the community a chance to participate in solving homelessness and food redistribution,” Bailey said.
The evening is promoted as an “urban street vibe celebration with a twist of masquerade.”
In addition to sets of aerialists, new to this year’s event is a body-painted model and a wine wall.
“You buy corks and on the cork there will be a number and the number corresponds to a number [on a wine] on the wall,” Bailey explained, adding the bottles of wine are always good quality so guests may get a wine worth much more than they paid.
Unlike in previous years, companies can buy VIP tables, making it an option for a corporate Christmas party.
“They will have a section up above, which is something new that we have never done before. They will have their own section with bartender and servers,” said Lauri Arneson, a director with the society.
Arneson said while some people dress formally for Crave, it is not required. Because of the loose atmosphere of the event that encourages mingling, Arneson also said newcomers to Squamish could come out and make new friends or chat with neighbours.
Of course food and wine are a mainstay at the event with more than 12 local chefs creating dishes paired with СƵ craft spirits, wines and beer.
“The whole work that Helping Hands does is amazing,” said Mayor Patricia Heintzman. “This is their big fundraiser. It is a very social, fun event.”
