For the last 21 years, enrolment in French immersion has been increasing across СÀ¶ÊÓÆµ In the Sea to Sky School District, those numbers are even higher with more than 21 per cent of all students learning in French.
"This year we celebrated 50 years of French immersion in British Columbia. From modest and determined beginnings, this exceptional education program has grown to expand into almost every corner of our province," Greer Cummings, the president of Canadian Parents for French СÀ¶ÊÓÆµ & Yukon, said in a press release.
The Canadian Parents for French СÀ¶ÊÓÆµ & Yukon released the findings of their latest report on Sept. 3, just as schools were opening their classrooms to students after the summer break.
As of last school year, there were 1,087 students registered for French immersion in SD48, making up 21.18 per cent of the district's students. In СÀ¶ÊÓÆµ, French immersion students are 9.49 per cent of the school population.
In Squamish, French immersion is offered at Squamish Elementary and Garibaldi Highlands Elementary schools.
