Squamish Axemen players battle in a scrum with members of Kats RFC during СÀ¶ÊÓƵRU action on Saturday.

The Squamish Axemen started off slowly but there were some encouraging signs in the second half during the club’s return bout to the СÀ¶ÊÓƵ Rugby Union’s Third Division on Saturday.

The first game of the Spring Rugby Season saw the Axemen lose 26-5 to the champions from the Fall Season, Kats RFC, in Vancouver Jan. 31.

Squamish got off to a slow start as many of the players were playing their first game in several years and for some it was their first game ever. The Kats capitalized and used their forward pack to dominate the early play and build a 21–0 first half lead.

Early into the second half, the Axemen began to find their stride and settled into a strong team defensive and ball possession game. Being able to hold back the Kats created several turnovers which lead to several offensive attacks inside the Kats 22-metre line and eventually resulted in the Axemen’s only try of the match scored by Squamish native Nolan Prevost.

The final tally was 26 to 5 for the Kats but the Axemen matched the Kats to a 5-5 duel in the second half.

Next up for the Axemen is a bout against the Rowers on Saturday (Feb. 7) at Brockton Oval in Vancouver.
