Hundreds of runners hit the trail at Alice Lake for the annual 5 Peaks trail run on Saturday (June 6).
It’s the fourth straight year that the event has returned to Squamish for race two of its six-race series, featuring some of the most challenging trails in the Sea to Sky Corridor and Lower Mainland.
Racers had the option of competing in the 11-kilometre enduro course or the nine-kilometre sport course, and there was also a three-kilometre timed kids’ race to go along with a free one-kilometre kids’ race.
Squamish runners were more successful in the sport race, as Tara Holland posted the top female time and finished eighth overall amongst all racers. Holland completed the course in 48:57 and beat the second-place woman by nearly two minutes.
Bowen Island’s A.J. Ballou (41:58) had the top time in the sport, beating out Kamloops resident Marcus Allen (43:55) and Vancouver’s Craig Chilton (46:55).
Squamish’s Hunter Sones also had a strong showing, finishing fifth overall with a time of 47:41.
Lee Edwards was the only other local athlete in the top 50, as he placed 31st with a time of 56:27. Edwards also finished first in the men’s 50 to 59 division.
North Vancouver’s Michael McMillan won the enduro, posting a time of 50:28 to beat out Vancouver’s Cody Callon (52:27) and Maple Ridge’s Mike Murphy (53:05).
Zac Gartside from Garibaldi Highlands placed fourth, with a time of 56:44 and won the male 20 to 29 division.
Paul Romero was the only other local runner to finish in the top 50, placing 16th overall with a time of 1:03:16.
Vancouver’s Corri Longridge was the fastest female in the enduro, clocking in at 59:27.
Vancouver’s Graeme Chilton tied with Vancouver’s Tilda Cressman in the three-kilometre kids race, both completing the course in 15:43.
