Triathlon video contest returns

Contest gives anyone the chance to win lifetime entry to race

A lifelong entry to the Squamish Triathlon is up for grabs and all that's needed is a little creativity and video skills.

The Squamish Triathlon: A Memorial to Bob McIntosh this week announced the return of a contest for keen triathlon competitors with artistic abilities.

The contest asks participants to make a triathlon video up to 60 seconds in length, publish it to YouTube, send a note with the video link to the Squamish Triathlon then encourage friends to view the video.

The maker of the best video as judged by the Squamish Triathlon executive will be announced on July 15 during the Squamish Triathlon awards ceremony. The creator of the best video will receive free entry into the 2013 race and every race after that.

"This is a really exciting contest that will give athletes a chance to tap their creative side," race director John French said in a statement. "We are looking for videos that promote the sport, healthy lifestyles, sportsmanship and Squamish."

The contest is open to anyone 16 (as of July 10) and older. All entries must conform to relevant laws. To be considered for the contest, videos must be uploaded to YouTube. Links to videos created for the contest must be sent to [email protected]. The deadline for submissions is July 5 at 5 p.m. The Squamish Triathlon executive will determine the winner based on the contest criteria along with the number of online views.

"We want triathletes to have some fun with this," French said. "With the number of smart phone cameras and small digital cameras out there, it is really easy to create videos. High-end HD projects with professional sound are also welcome. We look forward to seeing a creative bunch of videos."

French told The Chief that last year's video contest winner, Lutz Riemenschmeider of Germany, has yet to register for the 2012 race.

The Squamish Triathlon is held every July in memory of local triathlete Bob McIntosh, When McIntosh died in 1997, a group of his friends came together to create his dream of organizing a triathlon in Squamish.

Net proceeds from the triathlon are donated to the Robert W. McIntosh Scholarship Fund. Scholarships are awarded to a pair of Squamish students who demonstrated abilities in academics, athletics and citizenship. Over the last 14 years more than $40,000 in scholarships has been distributed.
