It has been a tough two weeks for our firefighters. Squamish Fire Rescue responded to a structural fire at an apartment complex in downtown Squamish on Saturday, April 4 ["Man dies in Dentville Fire," The Chief, April 10]. A total of 28 volunteers and five career firefighters responded. The quick response of our skilled and experienced firefighters saved the displacement of 10 additional families from their homes.

On Tuesday, April 14, Squamish Fire Rescue responded to a fire at an apartment complex in downtown Squamish ["Fire takes life at seniors' home," The Chief, April 17]. The Squamish Fire Department responded with 4 trucks and 23 members to contain and extinguish the fire. Regrettably, one resident passed away after being rushed to the hospital.

The community of Squamish is fortunate to have a dedicated department of career and volunteer firefighters. These individuals give not only time, but also accept the emotional distress associated with being a firefighter and attending traumatic events.

It is an enormous commitment from the firefighters, but also an enormous commitment from their families who support these dedicated individuals who give up family time to protect our community.

When an incident occurs there is a combined effort shared to help those involved in these unfortunate events and we thank the Squamish RCMP, 小蓝视频 Ambulance Service, and Emergency Social Services division of the Squamish Emergency Program.

It is a privilege and an honour to have a committed department of firefighters. We admire the dedication, the prompt response, the knowledge and experience of all our career and volunteer firefighters and we thank you.
